Indian Public health Standards (IPHS) revised guidelines : Medicoz Community

The Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) guidelines come under the NHM, MoFHW and serve as an important tool to improve the quality and outcomes of the healthcare system in India.The 2022 guidelines have been developed keeping in view the following:

• Recent developments in the public health system (NQAS, LaQshya, SUMAN etc.)

• Impact of COVID-19

• Widened scope of Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC) and need to strengthen secondary health care services

• Need to evaluate and re-assess the health
standards from time to time

•Universal health coverage

Classification of the public health system under IPHS 2022:

• District Hospitals (DH) & Sub District Hospitals (SDH).

• Every district to have 1 bed/1000 population as ‘essential and 2 beds/1000 population as ‘desirable

• Population of <5 lakh with a functional DH do not require an SDH

• Population of 5-10 lakh can have 1 SDH followed by 1 more for every 10 lakh

• A new grading system for DHs has been
developed

•Community Health Centres (CHC)

• CHCs have been divided into Non-FRU CHCs (rural) and FRU CHCs (rural and urban)

• Non-FRU CHCS will cater to a population of 80,000 in hilly and tribal areas and 1,20,000 in plains and FRU CHCs (rural and urban) will cater to a population of 2.5 lakh in non-metro cities and 5 lakh in metro cities.

• All CHCs at the block headquarter level are to be developed into Block public health units (BPHU)

• Health and Wellness Centres – Primary Health Centres (PHC)

• PHCs have been renamed to Health and Wellness centre- PHC to concentrate on Comprehensive Primary Healthcare (CPHC)

• Specialist UPHC/Polyclinic (urban) that cater to a population of 2.5- 3 lakh have been included

• PHCs can be further extended to 24X7 PHCs or UPHCS with facilities to conduct deliveries

• Health and Wellness Centres Sub Health
Centres (SHC)

• Subcentres have been renamed to Health and Wellness centre- Sub Health centre similar to PHCS

• Urban Health & Wellness Centres (UHWC) that cater to a population of 15,000-20,000 have been included

• FRU- First Referral Unit
