Indian Hypertension control Initiative – Medicoz Community
The Indian Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI) is a joint initiative started by the MoHFW, the ICMR ,State Governments, and WHO- India to improve hypertension control to prevent deaths due to non-communicable diseases. The United Nations General Assembly has recently recognized
IHCI for its effective intervention to control
hypertension within India’s existing primary healthcare system.
Goal:
The IHCI has adopted the “25 by 25” goal to achieve the target of a 25% reduction in the prevalence of hypertension by 2025. Its activities are monitored by public health professionals i.e., cardiovascular heath officers (CVHOs) at the state and district level, and non-medical graduates i.e., senior treatment supervisors (STSs) at the sub-district level.
Components:
• Use of standardized hypertension treatment protocols approved by national and global policies.
• Availability of
recommended protocol drugs to provide a regular and uninterrupted supply of medications.
• Task-sharing and team-based care involving nurses, health workers, and ASHAs to improve treatment compliance.
• Patient-centered services provide easy access to BP monitoring at Health & wellness centers and PHCs
• Information systems that provide real-time BP monitoring to improve patient folloW-ups: Use of the “Simple App” in all IHCI states.
